LuLu Exchange is one of the most visible names in the UAE — branches inside LuLu Hypermarkets and standalone locations on nearly every street corner. Its app, LuLu Money, advertises zero fees to a specific list of countries that includes Nepal. Here's how it actually works, and what "zero fee" really means once you look closer.

Who LuLu Exchange is

LuLu International Exchange L.L.C. has operated in the UAE since 2009, and today runs more than 225 branches across 11 countries as part of LuLu Financial Holdings, headquartered in Abu Dhabi. It's licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE for foreign currency exchange, wage payments, and remittance operations, and separately licensed in the Philippines by Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas — a genuinely large, multi-country regulated operation, not just a UAE-only brand.

The zero-fee list, and what it actually means

LuLu Money, the app, offers zero transfer fees to a specific list of countries — India, Egypt, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, and Sri Lanka. Nepal being on that list is genuinely useful to know. But the same principle we've covered elsewhere on this site applies here too: zero fee doesn't mean zero cost. LuLu still applies a margin below the reference exchange rate, so the actual amount your recipient gets is what matters — not whether a fee line shows AED 0.

How the app and branches work

Registration requires a walk-in KYC verification with your Emirates ID at any LuLu Exchange branch before you can use LuLu Money digitally — unlike some competitors that support fully remote onboarding, this one step still requires showing up in person once. After that, most transfers via LuLu Now or cash pickup arrive within 30 minutes; bank account transfers can take up to 3 business days due to intermediary bank delays. LuLu also supports Aani, the UAE's instant payment network, for domestic transfers, which typically process instantly at no fee from LuLu's end.

Support and rate alerts

LuLu offers 24/7 live chat through the app and website, email support, and a 24/7 toll-free phone line. The app also includes a rate alert feature — set your preferred exchange rate, and get notified by email, SMS, or push notification once it's hit, useful if you have flexibility on timing.

Sending to Nepal specifically

Since Nepal is on LuLu's zero-fee list, it's genuinely worth comparing against other options — but compare the actual NPR amount received, not just the AED 0 fee line. Check current rates across all providers here, including LuLu, before deciding.
