How Nepali Freelancers Get Paid From Abroad: Payoneer, Wise & More

PayPal barely works in Nepal. Here's how freelancers actually receive international payments from Upwork, Fiverr, and direct clients.

If you're freelancing from Nepal for international clients, getting paid is genuinely the hardest part — PayPal's availability here is limited and unreliable. Here's what actually works.

Payoneer: the default for platform work

Payoneer is the most widely used option among Nepali freelancers, largely because it's built directly into Upwork and Fiverr's payment systems. You create a free account, verify your identity, and link it inside the platform — earnings move to Payoneer, then you withdraw to your Nepali bank account in rupees. Expect to lose money at two or three points: the platform's own commission first, then Payoneer's withdrawal and currency-conversion fees. Withdrawing in sensible batches rather than many small amounts reduces how much you lose to flat fees along the way.

Wise: better for direct clients

If you're invoicing a client directly rather than through a platform, Wise is worth setting up alongside Payoneer. It applies the real mid-market exchange rate with a transparent, disclosed fee — genuinely lower cost than Payoneer's combined fee structure when a client is willing to pay through it. The trade-off: Wise's availability and specific features for Nepal have shifted over time, so verify current functionality before relying on it as your only method.

Platform-specific realities

Upwork supports direct local bank withdrawal from Nepal for a small fixed fee, and recently partnered with Wise to speed up transfers to select currencies. Fiverr doesn't support direct bank withdrawal for Nepal at all — sellers route through Payoneer first, then withdraw from Payoneer to their bank. Knowing this before you pick a platform, rather than after your first payment gets stuck, saves real frustration.

Bank wire transfers for larger amounts

For a direct client sending a larger, one-off payment, a standard SWIFT bank wire works too — expect a receiving fee on your end plus your bank's own exchange rate margin. This suits infrequent, larger payments better than routine platform income, where Payoneer or Wise typically cost less overall.

Converting and declaring your earnings

Whichever method you use, your foreign income is still income under Nepali tax law — keeping clear records of what you've received and declaring it properly matters, separate from which app you used to receive it. If you're unsure how this applies to your specific situation, a conversation with an accountant familiar with freelance income is worth the cost.

Frequently asked

Mostly through Payoneer, which is built directly into both platforms. Upwork also supports direct local bank withdrawal for a small fee; Fiverr requires routing through Payoneer first.
