Wise vs Emirates NBD: Is Your Bank Really the Easy Choice?
Emirates NBD feels convenient because you already bank there. Here's what that convenience actually costs compared to Wise.
If you already bank with Emirates NBD, sending through your existing app feels like the path of least resistance. Here's what that convenience actually costs against Wise.
Emirates NBD: Nepal isn't a core corridor
Emirates NBD's free, instant DirectRemit list covers India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Egypt, Sri Lanka, and the UK — not Nepal. Since September 2025, Nepal transfers carry a flat AED 26.25 fee plus a wider FX margin than those core corridors get.
Wise: built for Nepal the same as everywhere else
Wise doesn't distinguish between "core" and "non-core" corridors the way Emirates NBD does — the true mid-market rate and disclosed fee apply the same regardless of destination. For Nepal specifically, that consistency tends to work in your favor.
What you're actually paying for with Emirates NBD
Convenience — no new account, no new verification, an existing relationship. On a large, one-off transfer, that might be worth it to you. On a routine monthly transfer, the non-core fee and margin add up to real money over a year that a five-minute Wise signup would have avoided.
One exception worth checking
Priority and Private Banking customers get DirectRemit fees waived entirely, regardless of destination. If that's your account tier, the math changes significantly — worth checking before assuming the standard fee applies to you.
The practical answer
For most routine transfers to Nepal, Wise is the better default over your existing Emirates NBD account. The exception is genuinely if you're Priority/Private Banking, or you specifically value not opening any new account for an occasional send.
