Malaysia to Nepal Money Transfer — Complete MYR to NPR Guide (2026)

Around 100,000–150,000 Nepali workers live in Malaysia, working primarily in manufacturing, construction, and security. The MYR → NPR corridor is smaller than the Gulf routes but has a distinct set of providers worth knowing in detail before sending money home.

MYR to NPR — what to expect in 2026

The Malaysian Ringgit floats freely against the US Dollar, which means the MYR/NPR rate moves a bit more than the pegged Gulf currencies. Mid-market rates in early 2026 sit around 28.5–29.5 NPR per Ringgit. Provider margins range from 0.6% (Wise) to 2.5% (Maybank wires).

For a live comparison, our MYR → NPR corridor page ranks every available provider by what your recipient actually gets.

The main providers

Wise — best overall

Wise supports MYR outbound transfers and is licensed in Malaysia. The exchange rate margin (typically 0.6–0.9%) is meaningfully tighter than every Malaysian bank. Fees are around MYR 5 fixed plus a small percentage. Verification requires a Malaysian phone number and either MyKad or a passport.

Maybank and CIMB — convenience for existing customers

Both major Malaysian banks support international wire transfers to Nepal via SWIFT. Margins are wider — typically 1.5–2.5% above mid-market. For an existing Maybank customer sending RM 500, the difference compared to Wise is around NPR 200–400. The convenience is real but rarely worth the cost above small amounts.

Remitly

Remitly operates in Malaysia for outbound remittances. Express tier delivers within minutes, while Economy tier is slower but cheaper. Exchange margins are slightly wider than Wise but the speed advantage is meaningful for urgent transfers.

A typical MYR 2,000 transfer breakdown

  • Wise: ~57,500 NPR (0.7% margin + ~MYR 8 total cost)
  • Remitly Economy: ~57,200 NPR (0.9% margin + MYR 5 fee)
  • CIMB SWIFT: ~55,800 NPR (2.0% margin + MYR 25 fee)
  • Maybank SWIFT: ~55,500 NPR (2.2% margin + MYR 30 fee)

That is roughly NPR 2,000 difference between Wise and a Maybank wire on MYR 2,000 — about a week of typical household expenses in many parts of Nepal.

Cash pickup and rural Nepal

If your recipient lives outside Kathmandu, Pokhara, or Biratnagar and does not have a bank account, cash pickup via Western Union or MoneyGram remains the most practical option. Most rural districts have at least one agent location. Cash transfers cost slightly more than direct bank deposits but ensure access for recipients without banking infrastructure.

Practical tips

  1. Set up Wise once — the saving on every subsequent transfer makes the verification effort worth it within one or two transfers.
  2. Use Remitly Express for emergencies — when your recipient needs money the same day, the speed advantage is significant.
  3. Verify the recipient's bank account before sending — Nabil Bank, Global IME, and NMB are the most reliable Nepali banks for incoming international transfers.
  4. Compare every transfer — exchange rates and promotional offers shift frequently.

Frequently asked

Yes. Wise is fully licensed in Malaysia and supports MYR → NPR outbound transfers. You will need a Malaysian bank account or debit card to fund the transfer, and your recipient will receive NPR in their Nepali bank account, typically within 24 hours.
