It moves throughout the day, mostly in tiny amounts, occasionally by more when big events hit the currency markets. It is the fairest reference — but every provider adds a margin on top, which is why the actual amount your family in Nepal receives is always a little less. NPR to AED — the other direction

1 NPR is currently about 0.0240 AED at the mid-market rate. Sending from Nepal to the UAE is less common because Nepal has capital controls: Nepal Rastra Bank caps how much foreign currency an individual can move out of the country each year. Most flows are the other way — Nepali workers in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi sending payday remittances home. If you do need to move NPR to AED, most Nepali banks and a handful of exchange houses can help; expect larger paperwork and a wider spread than the AED→NPR direction.

What has moved the AED–NPR rate lately

The dirham is pegged to the US dollar at a fixed rate (1 USD = 3.6725 AED), so AED–NPR moves almost entirely with USD–NPR. When the dollar strengthens against emerging-market currencies — as it did through 2022–2024 — AED buys more rupees. When the dollar softens, NPR gains ground and your payday transfer buys a little less. The Nepal Rastra Bank publishes an official daily reference rate for major currencies which commercial banks in Nepal use as their starting point.

How money arrives in Nepal

Four channels, four trade-offs. Pick the one that matches how your recipient prefers to be paid.

• IME Pay — the second wallet, run by IME. Instant, works nationwide, especially strong in Terai districts where many Nepali migrant workers’ families live.
• Cash pickup — Prabhu Money, IME, Western Union, MoneyGram partner shops in every major bazaar. Fast but the rate is typically 0.5–1% worse than a bank deposit.

Nepal exchange rate in the UAE — where the margin hides

An estimated 500,000 Nepali nationals live and work in the UAE (sources: CBUAE remittance-corridor data, Nepal Ministry of Foreign Affairs), most concentrated in Dubai and Sharjah. Payday transfers drive the corridor. In Deira and Al Karama the exchange-house queues on the 25th and 26th of every month tell the story better than any statistic.

Three archetypes serve this flow: exchange houses (Al Ansari, Lulu, Sharaf, LuLu Money), banks (Emirates NBD, Mashreq, Dubai Islamic) and apps(Wise, Remitly, Botim Money). The exchange-house rate at the branch and their app rate are usually different — the app is typically a few paisa better. Banks add SWIFT fees on top of a wider spread, which is why they rarely win on a small transfer. Apps are almost always cheapest for anything above 500 AED, though branch cash pickup still matters for recipients without bank accounts.
